Built in the 3rd century B.C. on the island of Pharos in Alexandria, Egypt, the Great Lighthouse was built to serve as that port's landmark. Estimated at between 115 and 150 meters high, it was among the tallest man-made structures for many centuries and was identified as one of the Seven Wonders of the World by Antipater of Sidon. The landmark was initially a navigational landmark on Egypt's flat terrain and was later converted into a lighthouse, probably around 1 A.D., during the Roman period. At the apex was positioned a mirror which reflected sunlight by day; a fire was lit at night. Legends tell of the light from the "Pharos" being used to burn enemy ships but more likely is the claim that the light could be seen up to 35 miles from shore. With the sole exception of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Lighthouse of Alexandria survived the longest of the 7 Wonders, finally succumbing to earthquakes in the 14th century.
